Addiction or Passion, A Thin Line
The report in Mirror states that her parents bought her an XBOX one in January and by Mid-March she started showing signs of addiction to Fortnite. Parents claim “We got called in by her head teacher asking if everything was OK. She had fallen asleep twice in lessons and her grades were slipping,” said mother Carol.
“When we asked our daughter what the problem was, she became unusually argumentative and aggressive, which we just put down to her hormones.”
The child started using her parents’ credit card to do payments for in-game purchases in the game, which the girl agreed to when asked about it. So her parents tried confiscating the console but she hit her father in the face.
After the incident, they limited their child’s gaming playtime to one hour during weekdays and two hours on weekend. But one day her dad found her sitting on a urine-soaked cushion while playing the game which was a serious situation for them. “I found her backside was red-raw. She was so hooked to the game she wouldn’t even go to the toilet,” said Carol.
Her parents started taking professional help for their child when she admitted to playing games secretly for straight 10 hours in the night. Now she is in rehab to cure her addiction towards fortnite.
As video games are becoming mainstream again, it is going to face the same accusations that it faced decades ago. Many gaming titles are put under for recent school shootings and violent behaviour of the kids. Gaming Disorder has become a serious problem worldwide for parents as well as kids. While many people do not consider it real, WHO differs. Thus World Health Organization has decided to classify “Gaming Disorder” as an official condition too.
