Lucian is a champion who has a very strong early game. He can dominate most adc’s in the bot lane and once he gets a snowball going there’s really no stopping him. Let’s take a look at his base skillset:
Whenever Lucian uses an ability, his next attack becomes a double-shot. This is a really strong passive if used correctly. Whenever possible try to avoid coupling abilities. Auto attack after each cast to gain the full effect of this passive.
Lucian shoots a bolt of piercing light through a target.
Shoots a bolt of piercing light through an enemy unit, damaging enemies in a line. Piercing Light’s cast time decreases slightly as Lucian gains levels.
This ability can be used when the opponent follows the pattern of sheilding himself behind minions. You can also use this for early game poke but be careful as this costs a lot of mana.
Lucian shoots a missile that explodes in a star shape, marking enemies. Lucian gains Movement Speed for attacking marked enemies.
Fires a shot that explodes upon enemy contact or reaching the end of its path.
When Lucian or his allies damage a marked target, Lucian gains movement speed for 1 second.
Use this as a gap closure to continue chasing runners or to kite away from sluggish tanks.
Lucian quickly dashes a short distance. Lightslinger attacks reduce Relentless Pursuit’s cooldown.
I’m sure there isn’t any need to explain the use of a dash. Use this ability to create or cover distance between yourself and the enemy depending on your requirement. Also remember that this counts as a spellcast and will therefore proc your passive.
Lucian unleashes a torrent of shots from his weapons.
Lucian moves freely while firing rapidly in a single direction. His shots collide with the first enemy they hit and each do physical damage. The Culling does damage to minions.Lucian may use Relentless Pursuit during The Culling. Reactivate The Culling to cancel early.
The only problem is the positioning with this ability. As it fires in a straight line, be positive you’re gonna land maximum shots onto the enemy team before casting the ability.
As with all champions in the game, there’s no singular way to play Lucian. A common trend people follow however, is to play extremely aggressively and zone out the enemy adc from the lane.
Following this, set up a freeze and free farm till you simply outscale the enemy. While this looks really sparkling on paper, we all know this to be an ideal case scenario.
In actuality Lucian can be CC’d and his low AA range advises caution as he can be easily caught out while simply auto attacking. Take care to avoid getting CC’d whenever possible. Carry cleanse or buy off a QSS if the enemy has a lot of targeted CC/ if you don’t feel confident enough.
During the team-fighting phase, the best strategy is to group up and seige towers. Split pushing can be effective but you have to remember that lucian is extremely squishy and has just one dash for an escape. If the enemy team decides to target you, you’re as good as dead.
Grouping up (preferably as five) also means that the enemy team will probably be grouped as four or five to defend. In such cases, casting culling randomly will ensure that it damages most of the enemy team.
Another technique is to cast culling and lower the health of a single unit ( preferably a high priority one, rendering them unable to defend the tower.
The standard runes to run on this champion are precision coupled with sorcery. Press the attack is incredibly useful due to this champions passive.
Triumph can be subbed in for overheal in very particular situations. ( When running heavy lifesteal. ) The additional gold and health you get for takedowns is just really nice in general.
Coupled with your W , Alacrity is an amazing rune to have as the movement speed it can tend to give is incredibly helpful in many situations.
Coup de grace is inadvertently a great rune to have in general in contrast to its counterparts.
The secondary tree that can be run is sorcery. Manaflow band expands your mana pool while absolute focus increases your adaptive damage.
To summarize, Lucian is an ad carry with high priority in the bottom lane. While he easily outscales most opponents early game, the team-fighting phase is extremely disastrous due to his low AA range. Stay in the backline, attack whoever is closest to you and you’ll do just fine in teamfights, melting down the enemy team.
That’s all for this guide and I’ll see you on the rift!
